Facilitator Distress and Presence

Steve Dilworth, an experienced facilitator and professional supervisor, and I run a learning workshop for both internal and external practicing facilitators on the topic of facilitator distress. This workshop is inspired by the Doctorate programme that Steve is currently undertaking and by common themes we are noticing in our work and in that of other skilled facilitators around us.

It is also inspired by the work of John Heron who, on the subject of facilitator excellence and authority, states: "You have distress-free authority, and do not displace your own hidden pathology through your interventions".

We ask participants to consider their attitude to the concept of being free of distress in their work as facilitator.  We welcome them as someone who defines themselves as facilitators, whatever the particular context they work in.

If you are interested, we can offer you:

  • A safe space to explore, reflect and decide on action for the future.
  • Practical ‘vehicles’ to unearth the best questions.
  • Set piece techniques to stimulate deeper conversations.
  • A simple model to support reflective and reflexive practice, (i.e. before, after and during facilitation)
  • The opportunity to co-create learning.
  • The chance to commit to realistic and appropriate development.

We hope participants will come away understanding better how to:

  • recognise their own anxiety and pathology as a facilitator
  • establish the causes and triggers for that anxiety
  • observe their impact on the group when you are anxious or distressed
  • use styles and techniques to deal with the distress usefully
  • prepare themselves and access supervision to enhance their facilitation.

These day-long workshops have a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 attendees and cost £300 plus VAT per attendee, including room hire, lunch and refreshments.   Once we have between 10 and 12 people interested in the workshop, we will contact you all with some suggested dates.

To enrol on this course, or to know more about it, feel free to contact me or Steve himself on steve.dilworth@googlemail.com .  We are delighted to run more courses in a variety of locations so please do contact us if you are interested but cannot make the dates shown.
